Synopsis:
The film titled Shyalgar (advance/deposit) begins with Tamang culture, costumes, economic condition, scene and sociolect of Bhotang VDC of Sindhupalchouk district in Nepal. Mainly it shows the condition of daughters: discrimination and ignorance of schooling and so on. A daughter, Batuli, wants to have a higher education, but her father thaple forces her to go abroad and earn as daughters of neighborhood. Boys are very free; they are mostly involved in gambling and hegemonic activities. Parents prefer daughters’ earning to their education and social activities. They also prefer nieces/nephews through sisters/brothers as their daughter/son in law as their ancient tradition so, to preserve such tradition they exchange Shyalgar even their sons and daughters are very young, it is the main plot of this film. It also provides a moral lesson to be in unity which makes it a happy ending film, where all people promise to give up their immoral activities and make the society peace and prosperous by helping each other.
If we analyze this film from the point of view of its elements, director Mr. Roshan Phyuba has tried his best to combine the elements even its scenes are taken from remote places of Bhotang VDC in Sindhupalchouk district which lacks transportation and other basic facilities for film shooting. Exposition is made clearly where no character is left to mention their name and the role they have played in this film. Complication of the film itself foreshadows the plot so, audiences are in suspense. That’s how the related characters play the role on particular crisis up to the climax (burning house) but the denouement(realization of great mistake) shows probable solution as the resolution of the film Syalgar without any violence action. Finally, it leaves a moral lesson of unity is the greatest strength in the world with women’s capacity to manage and solve the problems of family and society too.
The film takes the flat or static characters, either they are protagonist or antagonist and major or minor. Proper language/dialogues are prefers to offensive and vulgar one. The film emphasizes the role of education and women to solve such social problems which are existing in our present society. Like Nima and his father make Chhopa, he gives up his immoral activities and his involve in social activities. Batuli and Sangre go abroad and earn money and properties which are needed for social progress.
